Soliton generation in active nonlinear metamaterials

چکیده
We demonstrate experimentally a mechanism of the soliton generation in nonlinear active metamaterials. Our meta-structure consists of a ring resonator formed by a microwave amplifier loaded with a left-handed transmission line. We demonstrate a variety of nonlinear effects not described by weakly nonlinear models, and study experimentally the system’s spatiotemporal dynamics, including the generation of envelope solitons being realized only for the backward-wave regime. Extensive studies of microwave properties of composite metallic structures led to the experimental demonstration of left-handed metamaterials [1] suggested long time ago [2]. Such metamaterials are created by resonant magnetic elements and operate for the wavelengths much larger than the period, allowing for the macroscopic effective medium description. The parameters of the effective medium de...

In this paper, we investigate the evolution of supercontinuum and femtosecond optical pulses generation through square lattice elliptical-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) at 1550 nm by using both full-vector multipole method (M.P.M) and novel concrete algorithms: symmetric split-step Fourier (SSF) and fourth order Runge Kutta (RK4) which is an accurate method to solve the general nonlinear...
متن کاملSpatial solitons in nonlinear left-handed metamaterials
We predict that left-handed metamaterials with nonlinear response can support both TEand TM-polarized self-trapped localized beams, or spatial electromagnetic solitons. Such solitons appear as singleand multi-hump beams, being either symmetric or antisymmetric, and they are modified dramatically by the hysteresis-type magnetic nonlinearity and the effective domains of negative magnetic permeabi...

[1] We analyze nonlinear properties of microstructured materials with the negative refractive index, the so-called left-handed metamaterials. We demonstrate that the hysteresis-type dependence of the magnetic permeability on the field intensity allows changing the material properties from left to right handed and back. Using the finite difference time domain simulations, we study the wave refle...
